Monday, August 26th officially kicks off the Fall 2019 academic semester for University of Akron students. If you’re here reading this, that probably means you!
Though summer is a season cherished by all students, college and otherwise, the first day of a brand new semester offers a completely fresh start accompanied by many opportunities for academic and personal growth. Whether you’re a young sophomore or a seasoned graduate student, we think there’s a lot to look forward to this year, and it’s worth taking the time and making the effort to ensure that you get started on the right foot.

In honor of the first day of the semester, we’re covering several great ways to help you set a foundation for success this year. Let’s jump in.
How To Start Your Semester The Right Way
Even Though It’s “Syllabus Week”, Attend Your Classes
The best possible start to the academic semester is, yes, to actually go to class. We know — the first day of classes generally receiving a syllabus and hearing a high-level overview of what’s to come in the course. And yes, we know that most things your professor will cover in-person are, in fact, covered on the syllabus (that can easily be accessed online).
With this in mind, who knows what you could miss by not being there? Making an impression and showing up to the classes that you’re paying good money for isn’t just a good idea; it’s your job as a student.
Make Any Necessary Schedule Changes ASAP
Life works in mysterious ways, and maybe you need to switch around your class schedule or simply drop a course because you’ve realized that your credit load is too high. Whatever the case is, if you need to make any changes, do so immediately, or as soon as possible.
There’s a very strict cutoff to receive reimbursement for a course that you’ve dropped, and there’s also limited availability (at best) for other courses you’d like to join. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
Start Organized and Stay Organized
Indeed, the best way to remain organized throughout the semester is to start organized. Even if you don’t have all of the necessary materials on-hand such as folders, binders, writing utensils, notepads, and so forth, the first week of the semester is not too late to go out and get these items.
This way, you’ll have easy and clear access to your course materials instead of a random pile of papers. Additionally, the EnVision team strongly recommends maintaining some sort of daily/weekly/monthly planner to make sure you know what’s coming up and when something is due!
Meet Your Professor or Instructor
Making positive, memorable impressions is a life-long skill that you’ll eventually utilize in your career more than you ever thought. So why not practice your introduction skills now? Professors and instructors are here to serve you, the student, and it generally behooves them to have a student go out of their way and introduce themselves before or after class.
You don’t need to “suck up” or come across as a teacher’s pet just to show your academic superiors that you care, but it never hurts to let them know who you are, what your intentions are, and what your expectations are for the course. This type of communication will only help you excel.
Optimize Your Living Space
Returning to a messy, dirty apartment isn’t going to help you succeed this year. Your physical living space is a reflection of your mental space, and your mental space must be zen-like in order to achieve the highest grades and shoot past your academic and career-centric goals.
From investing in tasteful decor to buying a shoe rack, whatever helps make you feel more comfortable, efficient, and optimized at home is only going to help you be the best student you can be.
